snapshot [our wedding day]

Image
After we got engaged, we knew that our wedding day would be different. We both wanted to move away from the traditional amount of stress put on family and friends (and ourselves) and instead, keep towards simplicity, laughter, and memories. We knew that it wasn't September 15th that would be the defining day of our marriage, but our marriage itself. I would've described our wedding day as a simple celebration, a magical party of sacred importance. Five months later, all I remember is this abundant peace and giddy excitement as family and friends gathered to celebrate us- still, in awe.  Here are some photos from our day. Everyone came together on the day before to help us set up, decorate, and bring to life the start of a lifetime. It all still felt wonderfully surreal.  Day of: getting ready in the morning and feeling the jittery joy at seeing a message from HIM, my man. How I already missed him, and how I was ready for this missing...

from September: i.  A lone bus rattles it way up a winding hill that leads to our home for the next couple of days. As I can see it rounding the bend and passing an ancient cathedral about two miles from here, I settle down to write a few more words. My fellow is already tying his shoes, eager to explore. I'm still wading through jet lag, a blur of new sights and a language already pulling its bow tightly around my heart.  Buongiorno, our neighbors call up to us. Up here, the air is clean and soft. Portofino hugs the coastline which I can see from our bedroom window, pine green shutters pressed against the house to let in the whisper of a breeze. Outside, a silvery cat plays with grape vines, tossing the stems back and forth, as if they were strings. Our host has left us some white clusters to try and the fruit is heavy with sweetness and sun. ii. Everything seems to move at its own pace in this fishing village. Shop owners sit outside of their establishments, c...

snapshot [Siena, Italy]

from September. I'm waiting for this olive oil to start snapping in my pan before I toss in some basil. Outside the window of our small apartment, the sky is melting into the cut-side of an apricot. Siena, where we've made our home for the last four days or so, is just beginning to wake up. Italy has taken us pleasantly by surprise in that way. You never quite know which shops will be open or if they'll even roll open their doors before eight in the evening, but one thing you can always count on, is the streets flooding to life after dark. What a strange, beautiful miracle. Every corner, basking in the soft glow of light. A hum of conversation wherever you go. In the piazza, cafe's are spilling their lilting music. Cigarettes dangle from the fingers of strangers, along with scoops of gelato in cones, bowls. My husband says we are to get gelato every night, so when I say, surprise me with a flavor, he selects one that resembles nougat. I don't order any othe...

a love note

Image
We're one month into marriage and my husband follows my loud calls into our bathroom where I am staring at the sink. I point at a large, spindly spider that's clinging to the slippery bowl. Here's a note for the future: know where danger lurks so you can be prepared. I guess that means sinks. Later, I listen to him exclaim over how scarring the elimination process was. "I killed a bro!", he mourns. Autumn has me restless, like usual. During sunny days, before the months and months of rain, I long to be out and about in nature. I crave the earth beneath my feet and to be present as the amber leaves slip down beside me. This time of year always feels like a dance just beginning. That kind where you have to leave before the final scene and your heart is pumping and the music is growing and growing. I don't want to miss the crescendo. Marriage has seen my husband throw on his coat, wrap a scarf around his neck, and take my hand as we wander the trails behin...
